Heard about issues impacting the supply of new cars? We answer all your questions

Whether you’re looking to order your first Motability car, or due to renew your current Motability agreement, we understand that you may have some concerns about how the current supply and delivery issues surrounding new cars may impact you.

We’ve put together a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) below which we hope will help.

  • There is currently a Worldwide shortage of semiconductor chips which are used within the production of nearly all electrical items. These 'chips' act like a brain or computer and feature in all new cars (with most cars needing around 1500 each!). Added to this production problem has been a number of staff shortages due to Covid-19 lockdowns and isolations, and in some cases the temporary closure of factories which has resulted in a wider impact on the manufacturing of new cars on a global scale.
  • Our advice is to talk to us now. Whether you’ve recently been awarded PIP (Personal Independence Payment) and are joining the scheme for the first time, or you’re due to renew your current Motability agreement in the next year, we’d recommend you take action now. We’ll be able to advise you on what cars are available to order now and when other models will be arriving from the manufacturers.
  • We continue to have a full demonstration fleet available along with display cars in our showroom which means you can still see what’s available across the Suzuki and Nissan Motability ranges. We can arrange a test drive as normal so you can experience all the latest engine updates and safety features before choosing which car is right for you.

If you are approaching the end of your lease...

  • Don’t panic! We can help you arrange an extension of your current agreement until your new car arrives. You will need to make sure you’ve completed the MOT on your current car before the end of your lease otherwise you will not be granted an extension.
  • Whilst Motability will not confirm acceptance of your renewal until 3 months before the end of your current agreement, we can still assist you in finding a car that’s right for you and look at what’s available. The good news is that the Advance Payment stated at the time of ordering your new car will remain the same even if there is an increase before your new car arrives. Remember, even if you are within an extension period, you can place an order for your next car at any time.
  • Motability will continue to extend your current least until your new car is ready even if you’d previously had an extension applied. If your extension goes more than a year beyond your original expiry date, you will need to arrange for another MOT and where required a further service. The cost of any servicing or MOTs will continue to be covered, as will any associated repairs due to general wear and tear, even during your lease extension.
  • With the expectation that the issues surrounding the supply of new cars will continue into 2022, you may face further delays to your expected delivery date but you as long as your lease has been extended you can continue to use your current car. We are reliant on the manufacturers and changes to build dates and delivery times will unfortunately be beyond our control.
