There was never any doubt that the all-new S-Cross would prove popular when it was revealed late in 2021. With its new rugged exterior look, refined interior and improved spec, it was certainly in the running against some stiff competition when it came to choosing an SUV. As with the entire Suzuki range, safety was a priority when it came to design and when launched, the all-new S-Cross was the only car of its kind to offer ALLGRIP 4-wheel drive in combination with a (mild) hybrid engine for BOTH manual and automatic transmissions.
Now Suzuki have taken their self-charging hybrid technology to another level. The new full hybrid drivetrain has already proved extremely popular following its introduction to the Vitara range earlier this year so it can only add to the appear of the S-Cross and further enhance Suzuki’s hybrid offering.
Full Hybrid S-Cross - An Overview
Auto Gear Shift (AGS)
AGS is a type of transmission which automatically shifts gears along with operating the clutch. It provides the direct driving experience and efficiency of a manual with the automatic shifting convenience of an automatic.
MGU (Motor Generator Unit)
Despite its compact size, the powerful, highly efficient motor generates a maximum output of 24kW and up to 60Nm of torque. It MGU allows the S-Cross to start and accelerate smoothly as well as run the vehicle alone (i.e. drive on battery only with an inactive engine) while creeping, cruising and driving in reverse for quiet operation and minimal fuel consumption.
Full Hybrid Driving Cycle
The new full hybrid S-Cross will deliver a combined fuel economy of up to 54.3 mpg thanks to Suzuki’s improved technology. To help you understand how the full hybrid works, we’ve put together a summary of the S-Cross’ driving cycle: -
Stop - All units stop to prevent wasted energy consumption
Start - The electric motor quietly and smoothly starts off the vehicle. The engine gently restarts via ISG starter motor function if the accelerator pedal is pressed beyond a certain extent
Acceleration - The MGU instantly assists the engine for smooth and powerful acceleration. While the clutch is disengaged during gear shifts, the MGU fills in the torque gap to provide smooth, continuous acceleration. The MGU adds torque to engine torque when the accelerator pedal is pressed strongly, such as when going up steep hills or merging onto a motorway
Normal Driving - When driving at a constant speed of up to around 80 km/h, the engine automatically stops and EV driving activates. When driving at a constant speed, the MGU utilises engine power to efficiently generate electricity and recharge the drive battery while also driving the vehicle
Deceleration - The MGU generates electricity from kinetic energy to charge the lithium-ion battery. If the accelerator pedal is released at less than approx 135 km/h, the engine automatically stops to efficiently generate electricity
Low Speeds & Reversing - When cruising at a constant low speed and reversing, the engine stops and the vehicle is driven by the MGU (EV driving)
Hybrid Drive Modes
The full hybrid S-Cross allows the driver to switch between two different hybrid driving modes to maximise efficiency and depending on conditions. In Standard mode, the MGU more frequently assists the engine for more responsive performance. Eco mode increases the frequency of EV driving for greater efficiency.
Standard Mode | Eco Mode | |
Accelerator Response | Power is prioritised with more MGU assistance | Efficiency is prioritised with more EV driving and later engine response to accelerator input |
