Subaru Solterra All-Electric SUV 2023 Review

Introducing the Subaru Solterra - packed with next-generation features inside and out, state-of-the-art active safety and the trusted reliability which is a given when it comes to Subaru cars, and all of this with zero-emissions.

The name “Solterra” was created by joining the Latin words for Sun (Sol) and Earth (Terra) - pretty fitting for a car which is committed to safeguarding the Earth by being an alternative to a standard fuel vehicle and which is capable of going almost anywhere with Subaru's renowned all-wheel drive technology.

Read on to find out what you can expect from Subaru’s first ever all electric car.

Bold Design & Features

Subaru have described the Solterra to be the most tech-driven Subaru ever, with state-of-the art-technology, and we're sure you'll agree it doesn't have the look you'd expect of a typical Subaru. Subaru’s signature hexagonal front grille has been tightly integrated with the front fascia with thin and wide LED headlights complementing the overall look.

A low bonnet line also contributes to the sleek styling of the Solterra assisting with aerodynamic performance and excellent forward visibility whilst still retaining safety for passengers in the event of a collision. There are short front and rear overhangs and the bold wheel arch mouldings provide a confident stance and give a visual show of the vehicle’s off-road capability.

The sloped glass rear end has a dual-spoiler at the top and a ducktail spoiler at the bottom. At the back you'll find combination lamps positioned up high, with a trapeze shape that strengthens the design. Combined with an available panoramic glass roof and generous storage options, the Solterra provides a spacious and airy interior.

Interior

The Solterra features Subaru's most advanced multimedia system to date with it's wireless Apple CarPlay / Android Auto integration and a high-resolution 12.3-inch touchscreen. The centre console has been designed for a modern and sleek look and is almost Tesla like in appearance.

On select models, you can charge your smartphone wirelessly in the centre console while you safely operate the wired and hands-free connection to enjoy your favorite apps and smartphone content.

The back seats are spacious with adequate head room and leg space for even the tallest of passengers despite the raised floor which allows for a ground clearance of 8.3 inches lending itself for easy manoeuvring over rough terrain, allowing you to go places a traditional electric vehicles can’t typically reach.

Engine & Performance

The Solterra features a twin-motor each with 107bhp for a total of 214bhp and a 0-62mph time of 7.7 seconds - which Subaru have promised has precise control with every turn. A familiar 'X-Mode' function enhances the EV's off-road features, while the addition of the new Grip Control mode allows the Solterra to travel stably at speed over rough roads.

The 71.4kWh battery has a range of up to 288 miles and will charge to 80% in less than 30 minutes. It also features an 'efficient and effective' heating system to ensure consistent battery performance in all conditions.

Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive

The Solterra is the first-ever all-electric SUV to feature the capability of a Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system and takes the all-weather, all-terrain vehicle to exciting new places come rain or shine.

The balanced design of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive creates all-round stability and delivers an optimal distribution of power providing the driver with maximum traction and improved handling.

Subaru Safe and Trusted

The Solterra comes with a brand new comprehensive safety package fitted as standard creating a safer driving environment and complete all-around safety in an even greater range of situations. Subaru Safety Sense - includes: - Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) - Pre-Collision System (PCS) - Emergency Steering Assist - Lane Departure Alert (LDA) - Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) - Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) - Road Sign Assist (RSA) - Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) - Parking Support Brake (PSB) - Low-Speed Acceleration Suppression - Safe Exit Assist (SEA) System.

For the first time in a Subaru, a 360-Degree Surround-View Camera system allows for better all-around situational awareness. Another new feature for Subaru, the Solterra is equipped with standard 'Safety Exit Alert'. The new safety feature notifies you by beeping and displays a message if it detects danger when you are trying to open your door (which will come in handy following changes to the highway code in early 2022).
