The Suzuki Jimny: Five reasons why it's proven to be so popular

You may have been hearing whispers here and there about the new 2019 Suzuki Jimny due to arrive towards the end of the year. As the iconic car reaches its third decade, we wanted to take a moment to appreciate it and find out why it's proved so popular with thousands of customers over the years.

1) Reliability

We can certainly say it's 'tough as old boots'. The Jimny might be small but it's tough. It has been built to cope with serious off-road use. The engine and gearbox are well proven and the three-year warranty is a match for any other vehicle of this type. Suzuki has a good reputation for reliability and this is one of the keys to the Jimny's popularity over the years. There's no doubt the new model will live up to its predecessor and uphold the Suzuki reputation.

2) Compact, go anywhere 4x4

The Jimny is a 4x4 designed for adventure. The compact size allows the Jimny to manoeuvre over even the toughest terrain. This original, unstoppable 4x4 is perfect for the city while also being a real off-roader with a compact shape and lightweight frame and engine; making it one of the most affordable 4x4s around.

3) Excellent off-road ability

Off road is one of the many places where it shines, it's easy to engage four-wheel-drive and low-range is why it's become one of the most useful small SUV's on the market. Whatever the conditions, the Jimny has effortless handling with a light but strong 1.3 litre petrol engine. With a ground clearance of 190mm the Jimny can tackle almost any landscape while its 4-Wheel Drive low box offers exceptional performance in extreme off-road conditions.

4) Affordability

When it comes to pure off-roading, it's hard to beat the Jimny when it comes to affordability. No other new car offers quite as much capability with such a low price tag – in fact if you want anything approaching the Jimny's mud-plugging prowess, you'd be looking at a much bigger car and price to match.

5) Last but not least: it's all about the fun

So why is this little 4x4 so successful? To sum up, the Jimny is bags of fun to drive. Whether you're cruising around town or heading out on your next all wheel drive adventure the Jimny will be in it's element.

The new 2019 Suzuki Jimny - what we know so far

As we are a good number of months away from the arrival of the 2019 Suzuki Jimny (which is expected to be revealed at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show) there's still speculation on what it will have to offer. In the meantime, this is what we do know.

Leaked design images reveal that the 2018 Suzuki Jimny will come with a contemporary, yet robust interior design and we know many of you will be happy to know that it won't be lacking in modern-day essentials. It is expected to come with a touchscreen infotainment system as well as automatic climate control. It's also believed to have a grab handle on the front glove box to aid practicality while going off-road, true to it's 4x4 roots.

Styling on the whole remains simple with what some may view as borderline retro with round headlights and large angular windows for improved visibility. The car sports a minimalist front bumper while the sides get protruding wheel arches and a flat roofline.

So far, only a three-door hardtop version has been seen, but a larger five-door model is expected.

Recent reports suggest that the 2019 Jimny will have Suzuki's 1.0 litre Boosterjet engine (which can be seen in the Baleno, Swift & S-Cross) and for those off-road enthusiasts, it's believed a low-range gearbox will remain. The Jimny will also come equipped with Suzuki's ALLGRIP 4x4 system for improved handling capabilities.
