The wait is almost over for all you Subaru diehards as we receive the announcement of their first ever pure-electric model due to hit showrooms next year.

The brand new compact SUV has been developed in partnership with Toyota playing into both brands’ strengths. As such, the new zero-emission family SUV will combine Subaru’s four-wheel-drive and off-road expertise with Toyota’s World leading electric technology.

Subaru has named its first EV the “Solterra”. So what’s in the name?

The name “Solterra” was created by joining the Latin words for Sun (Sol) and Earth (Terra) and we think you'll agree it’s a fitting name for a brand equal with everything outdoors and adventure.

Read on to find our what you can expect from Subaru’s first ever all electric car...

Design & Features

Teasers suggest that the design is barely different from that of the Toyota bZ4X (the first in their BZ 'Beyond Zero' line up) and the similarity of the designs are clear with Subaru and Toyota having co-developed both models.

Subaru are keeping tight-lipped on the technical detail but Kazuhiro Abe, Vice President for Subaru's product planning division, says the new all-electric model will be about the same size as the 2021 Subaru Forester.

They also added that the Solterra would be by far the most tech-driven Subaru ever with state-of-the art-technology.

We'll keep you updated on details of the features and specifications as and when more information is revealed.

AWD - All Wheel Drive

It's no surprise that the Solterra will come with All-Wheel Drive (AWD) as standard across all it's trim levels. It's also been revealed that it could offer a front-wheel-drive model with one motor and an all-wheel-drive variant with two motors but again, full details are yet to be released.

Interior

Whilst we don't yet have an official image of the interior, it's expected to look very similar to that of the Toyota bZ4X (pictured). A modern yet minimal design for the dashboard.

We expect the interior highlight will be a wide-aspect infotainment display in the center of the dashboard.

Price and availability

The Solterra will be going on sale by the summer of 2022 and will join the existing line of Subaru's SUVs - Outback, Forester and the XV.
