Winter Tyres Vs Standard Tyres

As the winter days draw in and the temperatures drop, your choice of tyres should be something to think about.

Winter tyres should be a consideration for anyone who drives to work or carries out the school run and are on the roads during the coldest conditions.

Winter weather tyres when fitted to the driving wheels of you car (your car will have either front or rear wheel drive if it’s not a 4x4) will give you extra traction to keep you moving in snowy and icy conditions. But when fitted to all four wheels, winter tyres will offer better traction along with better braking and better control due to the tyres’ increased grip on the road when all four wheels can play their part in braking and stopping the vehicle in a straight line.

How winter tyres put you in control

Winter weather tyres are one of the safest options for the colder months, when temperatures rarely rise above 7°c and the roads are cold and slippery. When temperatures drop below 7ºc, standard tyres harden and lose flexibility, which can affect braking, accelerating and cornering.

Winter tyres are carefully designed to absorb moisture and their rubber compound is adapted so as to greatly improve braking and traction in cold, wet, icy and snowy conditions.

...and help you avoid accidents

Did you know that good quality winter tyres can improve braking by up to 25% and improve collision avoidance by 38% making it safer for everyone on the road, not just you.

Grip comes down to your tyres

No matter how many electronic driver aids your car is fitted with, the ability to maintain grip is determined by your tyres.

The expense of outfitting your vehicle with winter tyres is nothing compared to the reassurance of protecting the core stability of your vehicle.

Journeys made easier - for wherever you go

Different countries have different winter safety specifications so if you're thinking of going abroad with your car it might be worth checking things out.

In some countries, winter tyres can be a compulsory requirement!

DID YOU KNOW...

Tests conducted by the British Tyre Manufacturers Association found that a car braking from 60mph on a wet road and in a temperature of 5°c, stopped five metres shorter when fitted with winter weather tyres. This is equivalent to more than one car length.

This extra grip is just as effective on flat roads as it is when going up or down hill, possibly even more so as the majority of hazards requiring safe and efficient stopping (for example traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, children running out etc) will occur on a flat road.

Winter weather tyres should not be confused with “knobbly” snow tyres which are designed to give extra traction in snow but may give less of a grip on slippery and icy roads due to their “aggressive” tread construction.

Winter weather tyres are, due to their clever design, able to afford extra traction and control in all winter weather conditions.
