Introducing Photochromic Windscreens - Exclusive to Colin Appleyard
Research & Development
In 2016, a team of innovators at Colin Appleyard contacted a Yorkshire-based laboratory with a question. Our team are often moving cars around the forecourt or between branches, and as many drivers are aware, the sun can be dazzling particularly when it is low in the sky and when reflecting off a wet road. Fed up with constantly having to have sunglasses on hand, forgetting them in the dealership, or leaving them in a car they'd just dropped off with a customer - we pitched an idea to this local laboratory.
Like with "transition lenses", we wanted to know whether this could be developed further to be applied to car windscreens and negate the need for sunglasses. The idea was for a coating which could be applied in-house, and at the customer's request. It's been 3 years in the making, but our friends at YBF Labs have managed to create a revolutionary, long-lasting and cost-effective formula.
Introducing the brand new, AFD Windscreen Coating - exclusive to Colin Appleyard.
How does it work?
Similar to photochromic or "transition" lenses in glasses, the windscreen is coated in the AFD formula, left to dry and seal for an hour and then will last for at least 2 years from application. In luminance values of less than 2 kcd/m2 the coating doesn't react and the windscreen is transparent. Once the luminance value exceeds 2 kcd/m2 then the coating will react and darken in just 1.5 seconds. The time it takes for the formula to react was exceptionally important and the most difficult task for the lab, as going from a sunlit road into a tunnel could hamper driver vision and so be a safety hazard. So the team worked hard to ensure the coating works lightening fast. It also protects fully from UVA/UVB rays.
The minimum guarantee for the coating is 2 years and it can be re-applied with a simple removal of the previous application. There is also no risk of the coating remaining in its 'reactionary' state. The only fault that could occur would be for it to not react at all - in which case you would need to reach for the sunglasses. However, if this occurs within the first 2 years, because of our guarantee then we will re-apply the coating for you free of charge.
Does it require any special care?
In a word, no. Washing your car, or de-icing in the winter will not affect the coating. It is susceptible to scratches if you're heavy-handed, so some care must be taken when using an ice scraper.
Ok, so how much does it cost?
One of the requirements when we worked with YBF Labs was to ensure the end product was cost-effective. To that end, a 200ml bottle (which is enough for 1 coating regardless of size) is available for just £299 (inc. VAT). When you consider that a pair of prescription sunglasses can cost this much and the coating will last for at least two years, then we think this is fantastic value for money.

AFD Coating (April Fools Day Coating) is not available in any Colin Appleyard dealership, nor directly from YBF Labs (You've Been Fooled Labs). Unfortunately this technology is not available yet.. but who knows what the future holds?
