Bar bashing, tyre shredding weekend at Silverstone for Team Appleyard Macadam
Round 9 of the Dickies British Supersport championship, was to be held at the historical Silverstone race circuit. A difficult track at the best of times, a last minute decision to change the layout to the national circuit, following the Moto GP washout just two weeks prior, added an extra layer of complexity to the event.
Jack Kennedy and his Integro Yamaha arrived at Silverstone with the bit between his teeth after finishing in 2nd place to championship rival Currie, in the Sunday Feature Race at Cadwell Park a fortnight earlier. With another 2 weeks recovery time on his hand, Kennedy was feeling positive.
Brad Jones turned up in the Silverstone paddock on Thursday still grinning and full of confidence following his maiden podium at Cadwell Park.
New Circuit Layout
The new circuit layout meant the team had to go back to the drawing board regarding the bike settings pre Fridays FP1 session. However, Crew Chief Alex Smith and Race Engineer Garry Hayes worked very hard to put a package together that would enable the boys to be up at the sharp end from the word go.
After a strong day on Friday, Saturdays qualifying sessions didn’t go exactly to plan. A small mechanical issue ruled Jones out early on in the session after having only done 2 laps. Meaning he would start from the back of the grid. Kennedy however was able to put in a few fast laps but lacked some feeling with the bike in the tricky mixed conditions, meaning 8th place on the grid was all that was possible. As ever the boys dug in deep and turned the bikes back around for the evening sprint race.
Unfortunately, a small unforeseen mechanical issue put Jones out early on in the race. After a hard race of bashing bars, Kennedy was able to bring the bike home in 2nd position just behind Alastair Seeley and just ahead of championship rival Currie.
Sunday's Feature Race
Sundays feature race saw Kennedy starting from pole position and a good first couple of laps put him in 1st, with Jones fighting his way up to 8th spot where he would continue to battle it out for the rest of the race.
As the bar banging continued, a close shave with Seeley put Kennedy out on the grass. Lucky to keep it upright, he had a big job to catch the leaders back. And that, he did. With around 6 laps to go, a number of riders started to have tyre issues, with James Rispoli crashing out after his tyre completely delaminated going into turn one. On the final laps, Seeley’s tyre deflected. Kennedy was also having major tyre issues but managed to nurse the bike home in 3rd place.
"Silverstone produced some close racing with two fast, hectic races. All credit to my team as we had a good feeling from the outset on the new track layout. The iffy conditions in qualifying meant starting from the third row for the sprint race wasn't ideal, but after a good start I got stuck in; fighting through the pack just narrowly missing out on the win by 0.068s.
Starting from pole for race 2 it was another frantic scrap, trading the lead with Currie and Seeley every lap for the win. On lap 7, I got squeezed in T2 and had to take avoiding action onto the grass, rejoining in 8th. I then went on a charge to recover the ground and caught up with the group again, breaking my own lap record on the way. We were back in the mix, but with 6 laps to go ran into tyre trouble. I had to stand it up to drive and knew I couldn't ask anymore of it having managed it so much. I nursed it to the line to take the final podium spot and 16 valuable points which is good, as I think we were lucky to finish in the end. Onto Oulton Park this weekend where we will be aiming for the two wins!"
"A challenging weekend for me, having had some mechanical issues on the Saturday which ruled me out of qualifying and also race 1 after 6 laps. Come Sunday, I felt like I hadn’t done many laps but the race was a good battle, trading paint with many riders. 8th wasn’t the result I wanted, but after starting further down the grid due to the mechanicals it was good to bring it home and get some points on the board. Up to 6th in the championship now, so it’s all eyes on Oulton Park this weekend - I can’t wait!"
