Judging by their announcement at the recent EICMA show in Milan, Yamaha have once again raised the bar for high performance motorbikes with the announcement not of one, but two new YZF R1s. Their flagship model has been taken apart and rebuilt from the ground up, and we can’t wait to get our hands on one.

The 2015 R1 has been completely redesigned and re-engineered to be as close to a track racing bike as you can get without having crowds cheering at you as you round the final bend and over the finish line. Thanks to a new cross plane inline, four cylinder engine, the R1 now outputs an incredible 200bhp. Add to that racing inspired technology that brings ABS, linked brakes, traction control, anti-wheelie control, a quickshifter, launch control, and several riding modes, the new R1 looks set to be a bike that’s very much in control of itself. Fortunately, Yamaha have seen fit to add 320mm discs with four piston radial calipers, just to make sure you can safely bring all to a halt when you need to.

If that wasn’t enough, Yamaha also announced a lightweight version, the YZF R1M. The slinkier model features the same spec as the standard machine, but with full carbon fibre bodywork and Ohlins suspension, along with an array of further upgrades, all designed to shave weight here and there, bringing it to a ‘dry’ weight of an impressive 177kg.

The new R1 comes hot on the heels of Kawasaki’s recently announced Ninja H2, an equally incredibly powerful bike which ought to provide tons of fun on the road as well as a competitive edge on the track. It’s an exciting time for bike enthusiasts like us; with so many stunning rides to choose from we hardly know where to point our wallets!

Needless to say, we’re more than happy for you to pop in and arrange a test ride at your nearest Colin Appleyard dealership once we get our hands on them. Watch for announcements.
